ICELANDIC CHILL: Britain’s worst late spring storm for years is hitting on Saturday
Storm Hannah has left thousands of homes without electricity overnight as it batters Britain with 75mph winds before bands of heavy rain and strong gusts hit the country during Saturday.
The latest storm will result in cooler conditions across the UK, with temperatures expected to plunge more than 10 degrees in some parts. Gusts of up to 75mph are forecast to hit the south-west coast by Friday evening.
Saturday will see heavy winds and strong rain, the Met Office said, as temperatures drop into the low teens, slightly below the average for the time of year.
However, conditions are set to improve by Sunday, a good sign for those taking part in this year’s London Marathon.
Storm Hannah, which was named by Irish forecaster Met Eireann, will bring gusts of up to 80mph to the south-west coast of Ireland, before moving towards Wales and the south west of England.
ESB Networks said on Friday night that winds had caused damage to the electricity network affecting approximately 10,000 homes, farms and businesses, predominantly in counties Kerry and Cork.
With the storm continuing to track across other counties, further damage to the network can be expected, the company added.

The alert comes at a time when security and intelligence agencies are concerned about the existence of sleeper cells on Indian soil that could be linked to the group that carried out bombings in Sri Lanka, where 253 people were killed on Sunday during Easter celebrations.
A caller claiming to be a lorry driver said major cities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Goa, Maharashtra and Puducherry would be hit by terror attacks… (which) will take place on trains, said the letter issued by Karnataka director general of police to the states mentioned in the tip.
“He also claimed that there are 19 terrorists present at Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu,” the letter added.
A Karnataka police official, who asked not to be named, said the letter had been sent out after analysing the tip-off, which was received around 5:30pm. “Inputs with the police suggest that over a dozen terrorists could have sneaked through Ramanathapuram,” the officer added.

It is very likely to intensify into a depression during next 24 hours over east Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of south Bay of Bengal,” a weather bulletin issued on Thursday evening said.
It added, “It is very likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 24 hours. It is likely to move northwestwards along and off Sri Lanka coast during subsequent 72 hours and reach near north Tamil Nadu coast on 30th April 2019.”

The cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into an ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’. It will cross the Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali by Friday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.
‘Fani’ is very likely to move northwestwards till May 1 evening and thereafter recurve north-northeastwards and cross the Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali and develop into an “extremely severe” cyclonic storm with 170-180 gusting to 195 on May 2.
As the cyclone Fani is intensifying itself in one of the most powerful tropical cyclones and approaching towards Odisha coast, its location is expected to be between Puri and Kolkata on May 3.
However, few models (JTWC, US) also suggest landfall point near Kolkata and Ganges Delta region. The wind speed is expected to be around 150-200 kmph and above.
Cyclone Fani is likely to get more intense than the cyclonic storm ‘Titli’ which had devastated north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha in October last year. Cyclone Titli had made landfall near Palasa, Andhra Pradesh, killing over 60 people and damaging over 57,000 houses and 2.7 lakh hectares of crop in Odisha.
Weathermen believe the extremely severe cyclone may trigger heavy rainfall in the coastal, southern and northern parts of Odisha and adjoining Andhra Pradesh.
According to Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre of Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), cyclone Fani will move towards north the Odisha coast.
On Friday, at around 11:30 am, it will make landfall between Puri and Paradip as an “extremely severe” cyclonic storm.
The system will further move along the Odisha coast to enter West Bengal and further recurve in the north-northeast direction.
The joint typhoon warning center of the USA (JTWC) has predicted that on the day of landfall, cyclone Fani will have a wind speed between 176 kmph to 216 kmph.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclone Fani will make landfall with a wind speed of 160 -180 kmph and gusting up to 190 kmph on May 3.
It is expected that Puri, Jagatsingpur, and Kendrapara will bear the brunt of the “extremely” severe cyclonic storm during its landfall.
