The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a contempt notice against Congress President Rahul Gandhi for his “Chowkidar Chor Hai” remark, a day after he expressed his regret over the issue. Apparently not happy with the Congress chief’s response, the apex court sent him the notice and said the matter would be heard on April 30. Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi, said the Congress President had accepted that he made a wrong statement without even going through the SC order on the Rafale deal.
Calling Rahul Gandhi’s reply to the Supreme Court’s notice mere “lip service”, Rohatgi said the Congress President had not apologised for his remarks and that he only expressed “regret” in his affidavit filed in the Supreme Court. He added that’s not how the apex court should be misquoted, especially by the head of a political party. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi said he’s yet to read Rahul’s reply, adding that the matter would be heard along with the Rafale review petition case on April 30.

A case has been registered against Congress President Rahul Gandhi for repeatedly asking the crowd to chant ‘chowkidar chor hai’ at a rally in Samastipur, Bihar. The case has been registered in Ara Civil Court against Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav who was also present at the rally, news agency ANI reported.
The Congress chief has been using ‘chowkidar chor hai’ slogan for Prime Minister Narendra Modi for alleged irregularities in the Rafale fighter jet deal under his watch. Gandhi alleges that PM Modi signed the deal at a price much higher than what was negotiated under the previous Congress government. He also suggests that the prime minister favoured certain businessperson in the deal.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi over his comments on the Rafale order by the top court.
The top court said it will hear the contempt petition against Rahul Gandhi along with the Rafale review petition next Tuesday.
On Monday, Gandhi had expressed regret over his comment that was seen to attribute his political slogan ‘chowkidar chor hai’ to the Supreme Court. He said if the court felt he had attributed any remark to the Supreme Court, he regretted it.
The Congress boss said he had made the statement “in the heat of political campaigning” and his reaction to the April 10 court ruling on admissibility of documents in the review petition “unfortunately got juxtaposed and mingled with a political slogan”.
The BJP demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi and called him a “liar of the first order” in public opinion.“This was an attempt by Rahul Gandhi to manufacture a lie and create a controversy in the Rafale deal… He should apologise to the people of this country,” said BJP spokesperson G V L Narsimha Rao.
The Supreme Court had earlier this month allowed three sets of documents to be used in the Rafale review petition, rejecting protests from the government which cited various grounds including national security to block use of these papers.
Rahul Gandhi, who was in Amethi then to file his nomination papers, had reacted to the news, saying: “Now the Supreme Court has made it clear that ‘chowkidarji’ (watchman) has committed a theft… I want to directly challenge that the Supreme Court has stated that you have indulged in corruption.”
