Putting to rest speculations of Priyanka Gandhi contesting the Lok Sabha elections against Narendra Modi, the Congress on Thursday fielded Ajay Rai from Varanasi seat.
The Congress also fielded Madhusudan Tiwari from Gorakhpur against BJP’s actor-turned politician Ravi Kishan. Earlier, there had been indications of Priyanka Gandhi being the Congress candidate to take on Prime Minister Modi in Varanasi.

Speculation on Priyanka Gandhi making her political debut from Varanasi was fuelled after Congress president Rahul Gandhi, to a question on whether he planned to field his sister against PM Modi, had said, “I will leave you in suspense. Suspense is not always a bad thing.”
On April 21, the Congress general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, said she will be happy to contest Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi parliamentary constituency if her brother Congress president Rahul Gandhi tells her to.
“You will find out. If my Congress president tells me to contest, I will be happy to contest,” Priyanka had told India Today.
Earlier during her tour to Ayodhya, the Congress leader had hinted at contesting the Lok Sabha elections from anywhere her party wanted her to.
“I have said this repeatedly that I will do what the party asks me to do,” Priyanka Gandhi had said.
She added that people were feeling harassed and wanted a change. The Congress fielded Ajai Rai against Modi in 2014 as well. He finished third in the contest, after Modi and Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal.
