India’s equity market found itself in turbulent waters during the week ending October 20. A result of rising crude oil prices, escalating geopolitical tensions, hints of higher interest rates from the US Federal Reserve, and weakened global markets all conspired to exert downward pressure on stocks markets of the world.
The primary catalyst for the market’s volatility is the escalating war between Israel and Hamas, which has stoked fears of rising crude oil prices. These tensions were further escalated by US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell hinting at the possibility of higher interest rates, resulting in surging bond yields. all this put together ignited the fear combined with frail global markets, left investors wary and risk-averse. The week ended with BSE Sensex shedding 1.33% or 885.12 points to close at 65,397.62, while the Nifty50 fell by 208.4 points or 1.05% to end at 19,542.65. The BSE Mid-cap and Large-cap indices also suffered declines, while the BSE Small-cap index managed to stay afloat, ending the week flat.
